Storyline:
It’s a story of battles both internal & external, of the two Afghani women Mariam & Laila. The book is set out around the time when the Taliban took over Afghanistan. An impeccable piece of historical fiction that will rip your heart out. It is a story of hope, love, war, fear, brutality, violence, abuse, resilience & courage.
Mariam was sent out to Kabul to marry a monster named Rasheed. After withstanding an immense amount of abuse & brutality for years from her husband. Under some unfortunate circumstances, Mariam is exposed to a teenage girl named Laila, living across the street & a friendship is formed.
This book portrays the struggle, sadness & survival of these two Afghani women. And how women are treated among the majority of our society.
My Thoughts:
This is by far the most heart-wrenching book I’ve ever read, An emotional rollercoaster, this book will borrow your heart at the start and will never let it go. The book has ended but the feeling remains to this day.
It took me quite a while to really get into the story but once I did I was completely invested. Hosseini’s writing style is so beautiful and emotive and again left a true imprint on my heart.
We live in a society where we’ve built spaceships, and artificial intelligence, we drive nice cars, wear expensive watches, & use state-of-the-art gadgets. But there are women who are still being abused behind closed doors, who can’t voice their opinion openly, who don’t have the privilege of education & little joys that life has to offer.

Only a few authors have the capability to make you feel a thousand emotions through their words & Khalid Hosseini is one of them. A thousand splendid suns is indeed a splendid read. Filled with strong emotions and a stimulating plot, it is one of my favorite books.
